These are not limited to academic skills and include some of the most widely agreed-upon and most important SEL skills, like self-awareness, relationship building, and personal safety. The music-based SEL resources from Quaver (they have other resources as well, but we’re focusing on these ones) help students develop some of the most important soft skills they’ll need for their futures. Showcasing their artistic talents should be something they’re proud of – not afraid to do – and that’s when the SEL side of things comes into play. Music classes, like art and even drama classes, can be outlets for students to express themselves and they shouldn’t feel worried about what others in their class might say or think. Knowing that every student has social and emotional needs as well as their typical physical and intellectual needs, Quaver has developed content for this purpose. Music is a bridge that can help educators impart lasting wisdom on their students and, now more than ever, that includes valuable social-emotional skills as long as those lessons are implemented strategically. The materials are designed for music educators to teach their students more than just music. Once you’re set to go, you’ll then be able to access the resources within Quaver, including the SEL materials. Instructions for how to use the QuaverCode to access Quaver can be found in more detail on their site. There are three types of QuaverCodes: One for teachers, one for students, and one for anyone who just wants to explore Quaver. You’ll also need to provide a QuaverCode to create the account. You’ll need to create a Quaver name, a password, and provide an email address to get started. To start exploring Quaver, you first need to create an account. With the recent release of their SEL-focused lessons, they’ve also gotten into this important area of instruction and provided a unique way for educators to teach SEL skills through music. Their team strives to keep music at the heart of what they do, but have taken their own lessons to heart by constantly striving to create genuine relationships with music teachers and delivering cutting-edge teaching and learning experiences that help create well-rounded students.Įssentially, they have been able to combine the need for that well-rounded education (often captured through STEAM learning) with the demand for easily accessible tech-based teaching resources. Focusing on general music education, they’ve reached almost 10,000 schools worldwide and seen their programs implemented in all 50 states as well as in 30 different countries. The Quaver team has been developing online curriculum for K-8 education dating back to 2009. Recently, the Quaver team released some new content geared specifically towards SEL and that got us thinking how this library can be used to impact the social, emotional, and artistic development of students. They’ve created digital resources for educators to use, specifically in music classes, to help children connect more deeply with academic content and with their peers. Combining music and technology for effective SEL experiences, Quaver helps enrich the lives of students and the relationships they build with pertinent technology. If you’re an educator who believes in the power of social-emotional learning (SEL), Quaver is a tool worth exploring.
